What kind of fish oil supplement do I take and how much?
ANSWER:
Look for a brand that will give you 1000 mg of EPA and 500 mg of DHA per day. This is the amount that has been shown in studies to be beneficial to people with depression.
(I recommend Dr. Andrew Stoll’s book: “The Omega 3 Connection” which gives excellent further advice on the benefit of Omega 3 Fish Oil on how to choose the right fish oil supplement.)
“A must-read for anyone dealing with depression” - Lauren Marangell, M.D. Director of Psychopharmacology, Baylor College of Medicine
The International Fish Oil Standards (IFOS) program which is affiliated with the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada (http://www.nutrasource.ca/ifos_new/index.asp) consistently conduct tests and posts levels of toxins in fish oil samples submitted by manufacturers.
Some of the top sources for fish oil supplements (according to IFOS) are:
Ascenta Health
Genuine Health
Nordic Naturals
Whole Foods Market
Zone Labs Inc.
See Yourself Well Inc.
Weston Health
A-M B-Well Inc.
Andrew Weil, M.D. Weil Nutritional Supplements
Life Extension
Theralogix
If the lot number on your fish oil is not listed on the IFOS site, then don't buy it!
